Just getting longer pushrods, why wouldn't that work? Turn DOD off and just match the size of the broken/short lifter.

Because the inside portion of the lifter will rub on the roller and damage it. Then the roller will wipe out the camshaft. It will do what this https://youtu.be/jJw7lTgJ9ic one did while being driven on bad lifter for too long.
