AFM/DOD delete cam question

I plan on doing a AFM/DOD delete in the spring time when it warms up (live in MI) and i have 2 questions. First, how often do you guys find that your heads are warped when you remove them? Second, I keep finding mixed reviews on this subject, but I have a 2011 Avalanche with 5.3l LC9, my question is, is it worth it to put the 6.0 cam in or just stick with the 5.3l cam. Truck is a daily driver, I know the cam specs are actually pretty similar, just curious if there is any benefit. Thanks in advance.

In most cases a person can get by without milling the heads stock applications. But there is a potential for a future head gasket leak by doing so. Lapping the valves will also allow them to seal at the moment. The problem with lapping valves though is it makes the ceiling surface a matched flat surface. When doing a valve job the proper way the result is two different angles that work together to make a seal. They use a 46u00b0 angle on one surface and a 45u00b0 angle on the other. The purpose for this is to allow for a seal that lasts a long time without the use of leaded gas. If the angles match then debris tends to get stuck on the valve over time and cause a leak. When lapping the valves not only do the angles match now but you have also ground a groove into the valve itself. This groove further prevents any debris from getting out and will lead to future leaking valves.

Every single head that I have placed in my mill has warped to it in some regard. Even the least warped ones are warped around the head bolt area. In those cases you can't see this warpage with a straight edge. Milling the heads is cheap, The more time-consuming and equally as important part is the valve job. Every single one of them that I've done a valve job on has at least two warped and take valves and usually several seats that are not ground properly from the factory.

As far as the camshaft from the 6.0 goes, I haven't messed with trying to put that one on the 5.3. The way I see it, if you are going to upgrade camshafts you might as well do it properly and get something worthwhile. The fact that you might have to do a custom tune that can cost several hundred dollars to gain minimal power isn't going to be worth it. If you're spending the money on a custom tune you might as well get a proper cam that will get you the performance you actually want.
