Bent pushrod

2013 GMC Sierra 1500. Currently at the dealership:

SCAN AND FOUND P0304. CHECK AND FOUND IGNITION COIL FIRING. CHECK AND FOUND NO COMPRESSION ON #4. REMOVED VALVE COVER AND FOUND BENT INTAKE PUSH ROD. RECOMMEND ENGINE TEAR DOWN AND INSPECTION FOR LIFTER/CAMSHAFT DAMAGE. $800

Unfortunately, misfire happened on the way to work, so it's probably done 50 miles since it started misfiring.

So I'm going to take it home 5 miles and try the lifter release method. Perhaps AFM delete if it comes to that.

Would it be better to drive it the 5 miles with:

New pushrod

Bent pushrod

Removed pushrod?

That's kinda cool. I made a momentary switch with a set of leads on the end that I can plug into relay, connector, or fuse sockets.

The computer does not need to be installed to jump and starter relay. Don't waste your time jumping the ignition relay. You must go after the starter relay.

Lifter can release without shooting the pushrod but it is rather unlikely.

The only way to check if the lifters come unstuck without it shooting the push rod out is by putting the rocker back on and seen if it can open the valve.

If you can hit it square enough you can hit decently hard without causing damage You just have to be mindful of how the tool is wearing out or mushrooming. However keep in mind it's not typically how hard you hit it that matters but rather high frequency that does a better job at releasing stubborn lifters. That's why I recommend things like a needle scaler or very buzzy sounding air hammer.

The pushrod sitting higher is not an indication of the lifter releasing. Sometimes as you're hitting the lifter it will slowly work its way up the lifter bore. This usually happens when the push rod is bouncing while you hit the side of the lifter with the tool. If the bushrod is bouncing that is a good sign and usually can mean the lifter is slowly working its way to a released position and could pop it any moment.

If you've been hitting for a couple of hours I would say you're not getting anywhere at this point and there might be something else going on or you need to try a high frequency air hammer type situation.

Unfortunately since it is number four intake you can't see what the roller looks like without pulling the head off. If you can't get it to come free you might just have to go in deeper. You might end up finding the roller is completely wiped out or something rather than having a collapsed lifter.

Balancer puller, the 3 claw Chrysler style. Balancer installer. Tq wrenches of course. The rest is mostly basic hand tools. The degreeing of tq to yield bolts can be done via marking the surface being tq to and the bolt at one of the points. Then consider every point on a 6 point bolt is 60deg of rotation. Use that to figure out how much you turned it. That is if you don't want to get a specific degree in tool anyway. I think that's pretty much it.

No, but definitely don't turn key on with battery hooked up and ECM out. It will trigger a bunch of communication codes in other modules. Don't forget to disconnect battery again to plug ECM back in.

Yes, the ECM needs AFM shut off in the tune.

When I replied last time that video wasn't available. Not sure if you added that later or not but clearly that looks like a collapsed lifter or bent pushrod. It's not likely you have both a spun lifter and a collapsed lifter though it is possible. You wouldn't be able to tell without uncollapsing the lifter first. The tool is designed to release that collapsed AFM portion of the lifter. So it looks like your next step is to release the lifter.

You can't see it from the valley cover except for that you might see marks on the roller because of that damaged. But even so that's hard to see. The best way is the test I talk about in the previous text before you replied here. Why can't you crank the engine over using the starter relay?

You could have them check for a spunlifter. Below is my FAQ response for such a situation.

The lifter could also be spun, using the starter relay with the keyu00a0off,u00a0spin theu00a0engine over. Make sure not to jump the wrong terminals as it could damage the ECM. Vlom Must be on for this test. While it is spinning watch the suspectedu00a0rocker move. Make sure that it rocks at least 6 to 7 times before you let up on the starter. If the one rocker stops moving before then, it is getting fed oil pressure and is likely spun. However, if two rockers stop moving then you likely have a leaking VLOM. You can determine a spun lifter by looking at the side of the lifter. To see the side of the lifter you need to pull the VLOM and clean out the oil tower of the suspected lifter with cleaner and shop air. Once cleaned you can look down the oil tower and if you see a hole in the lifter it is not spun. If however you see only shiny metal or a flat surface then the lifter has spun due to a bad plastic lifter guide. When this happens you will need to replace the camshaft and all lifters. This would be a good time to do a full AFM/DOD delete where you remove all AFM components and replace them with non AFM components.

The floppy rocker would have to be checked with a good pushrod installed. That doesn't sound like the rocker is loose from collapsed lifter though. That's a very subtle tick at most from the device I'm listening on. At most it might be a bad spot on the lifter roller but incredibly hard to say based on that video. If you have it in a shop for diagnostic what have they said so far? Doesn't even look like it's misfiring actively. At least not badly. I see a little bit of a shake there.

Best to drive removed pushrod on both intake and exhaust. But you will also want to unplug the fuel injector. I recommend verifying the lifter is collapsed and not damaged prior to the lifter release attempt.
